We’re all heartily encouraged to find balance – whether it’s balancing work with our lives, eating a balanced diet or balancing our mind, body and spirit.
It’s dangled in front of us as the modern ideal. It’s spoken of as if it’s an attainable, rational goal instead of something that more accurately describes a logical mathematical equation or a well managed budget.
Expecting balance to be an achievable outcome of human lives is an unrealistic notion and can only lead to disappointment!
Human beings are not logical, neat or linear. We are inherently unbalanced – we focus on one thing, often obsessively, for periods of time. We lurch from one thing to another. We immerse ourselves in our latest project for extended periods of time. It could be raising our kids, completing the renovation, generating sales or winning a promotion. We spend extended periods on different things depending on our focus or responsibility. We may raise our heads for moments at a time to have dinner with our family, energise our bodies or take the dog for a walk, but then we go back to our latest project.
Rather than aspiring for balance, the goal should be to align what we do with what’s important to us - RIGHT NOW.
People who feel most fulfilled and content are using their skills, experiences and talents to do what interests, stimulates or challenges them and provides an opportunity to make a difference or contribute in some way.
Instead of attempting to find balance, perhaps the goal is to know what you’re good at, what interests you, what your values are and what difference you want to make. Then do it!
